The Girona Pyrenees

The Girona Pyrenees are a mountain destination close to large cities in Catalonia. They begin at Cape Creus in the east and end in Cerdanya. Many winter sports fans from Girona and Barcelona choose one of the area’s four downhill skiing resorts as their holiday destination: La Molina, Masella, Vallter 2000 and Vall de Núria, totalling 162 km of skiable slopes. There is also a cross-country ski resort, Guils Fontanera, with 45 km of trails distributed along 18 circuits.

Ripollès is a region on the southern slopes of the eastern Pyrenees that includes the source of the River Ter and its tributary, the Freser. It has diverse local climates, ranging from the Mediterranean coast to the high mountains, which is good for winter sports.

La Molina, Vall de Núria and Vallter 2000 are the three ski resorts with facilities in Ripollès featuring lots of runs and slopes to enjoy the pleasure of gliding over the snow. La Molina is different because only one part of the resort is situated in Ripollès. This is the Pla d’Anyella with Alabaus as the main run in this sector. It also has a snowpark which was built for the Snowboard World Championships held at the resort in January 2011, and which this year is open to all, experts and beginners alike.

Vall de Nuria is a unique ski resort. You can only get to it using the funicular railway that runs from Ribes de Freser and has a 12.5 km journey which involves a height difference of 1,000 metres in just 40 minutes. It is a family resort surrounded by mountains that are practically 3,000 metres high.

Vallter 2000 is in a glacial cirque in the eastern Pyrenees in the municipality of Setcases. The resort is close to Barcelona (140 km) and Girona (90 km), making it the perfect choice for day trips.

Ripollès is an area that attracts people for many other reasons. It has more than 400 tourism establishments to spend the night in, with wellness centres and restaurants where you can enjoy the best cuisine from the mountains with routes around the Ribes valley, Camprodon and Baix Ripollès.

It is a landmark in cultural tourism and offers the opportunity visit the monasteries of Santa Maria de Ripoll, Sant Pere de Camprodon and Sant Joan de les Abadesses. In addition, throughout the year there are facilities for other sports besides skiing, such as hiking, horse riding, mountain biking and 4×4 routes.
