Proposals for the weekend

Summer solstice is just around the corner. That’s when in the region of Alta Ribagorça they have one of the oldest festivals related to the solar calendar. We are talking about the “fallas”. It’s held in the town of Durro, where year after year they reenact the celebrations originated ages ago. It entails to cut down seven or eight tall pine trees, and plant them on a high spot in the mountain, visible from the distance. Each tree is called a beacon. Participants light their “fallas” (torches) on a specific beacon, and they walk down hill forming a trail of light towards the main square of the town. That’s where the real celebration begins, with dancing around a big bonfire.

Another interesting activity for the whole family will happen this Saturday in the town of Cardedeu. It’s the Fair of Medicinal Herbs and Organic Food, which will be held in the park called Serreta. A healer will be present for those interested in knowing the curing effects of the plants that grow in the area. A photo contest will take place during the duration of the fair. It’s a great opportunity to immortalize a very unique experience.

Suquet de peix de Blanes

If you are looking for a more gastronomic experience you may want to head to the seaside town of Blanes. Until July 15, local restaurants offer in their menus a dish based on one of the traditional local recipes: “el suquet” (fish stew). You can lie on the beach afterwards. It’ll be worth your time.

But if you want to cool off, this weekend there is nothing better than canoeing in the Delta de l’Ebre. The team behind the Ecomuseo has organized a half-day guided tour in canoe on the Migjorn river, a channel of the Ebro river that does not reach the sea. Due to its characteristics, width, depth and low current, this place is ideal for canoeing. It is not recommended for kids under 12. Seats are limited. Meeting point is the Ecomuseo at 9 am. For more information and registration please call: 977 482 181.

And finally, we recommend the, modest but interesting jazz festival at the Galet Club in the town of Sant Pol de Mar. Founded in the late sixties by four friends, the event is embracing its longevity with more passion than ever. This Saturday June 16 at 10:30 pm, NEUS MAR & NITO FIGUERAS TRIO will play at Ca l’Arturo. On Sunday the 17th, it is the turn of SANT ANDREU JAZZ BAND. The time? Noon. The place? Plaza de la Punta.
