Gourmet month in Pla de l’Estany

Do you dare to try an emulsion of white vermouth on green peppers? How about a salad of broad beans or a medallion of veal with honey sauce? No? Do you have what it takes to sit in front of a plate of rabbit ribs “a la rabiosa”? If your answer is yes, you may be interested to know that the Grupo Gastronómico del Pla de l’Estany (in the province of Girona) celebrates a new edition of its gourmet month, starting on June 3rd until July 3rd. An initiative of seven local restaurants offering affordable menus with the best local product.

It all started back in February 2004, when these restaurants got together with a bunch of local producers to create a gastronomic group. Their motto: The pleasure of natural eating. They say this group was born from both, the need of the restaurants in the county of Pla de l’Estany to improve their menus, and the desire of the local producers to promote their handmade products. It worked. Chefs began to play with recipes, enhancing the already high-quality product, made, grown or produced locally, which guaranteed the freshness of the dish. This region is known for excellent garlic, several sorts of beans, pumpkin, organic produce, rabbit, lamb, beef, honey and extra virgin olive oil, just to name a few.

Lake Banyoles

You can use the visit to explore Banyoles, the biggest town in Pla de l’Estany. It rests next to a lake, which has seeped into the town’s identity. Beyond the natural beauty, this spot possesses a unique geological profile and is renowned by its great ecological and cultural value. Walking around the lake can help digest the gastronomic adventure.

One of the most evocative corners of the lake is the site called “de los Desmayos”.  Its name comes from the majestic willow trees, their long branches hanging low, almost touching the water. A bucolic picture that invites you to stay.

After the walk, you can end the day at the Museu Darder. A naturalist heaven with a long history; it opened in 1916. A great source for the visitor to learn and understand the particularities of this lake and its surrounding area.
