Pioneers in cross-country skiing

Sant Joan de l’Erm is the second biggest cross-country ski resort in Catalonia by skiable area.

Sant Joan de l’Erm is located between the regions of Alt Urgell and Pallars Sobirà in the Alt Pirineu Nature Park. It is a pioneer cross-country resort in Catalonia that opened in the early 1970′s, and the second biggest resort by skiable area. Its 38 km of trails are divided into various routes suitable for all levels and also for those who practice the “skater” or “skating” disciplines.

Its runs face the River Romanius and Sant Miquel valley offering magnificent views of the Serra del Cadí to the south, Tosa d’Alp and Puigmal to the east and a number of other peaks.

The Basseta hostel

The Basseta hostel is the starting point of all trails, with signposts that clearly show all routes. There are easier routes with gentle slopes for learning basic techniques and also more difficult ones. There is, for instance, a15 km trail that connects with the Ski Pallars-Port Ainé downhill ski resort. In the midst of the resort’s routes are the ancient ruins of the Sant Joan de l’Erm Vell hospice sanctuary, heavily used over eight centuries as it stood next to the crossroad of routes running through the Pyrenees. This trail calls for a certain skill level as there are some fairly sharp upward and downward slopes.

The hostel was built in the late 1960′s to replace the old inn that burnt down in 1935. It has 93 beds and offers all kinds of services, information, equipment hire, etc. Opposite the hostel is the Pla de la Basseta, a spot that is much appreciated by visitors in both summer and winter.

Customised ski passes

Since 2011-12 season Catalan cross-country ski resorts are launching a digital ticket system that will be more convenient for skiers and allow them to personalise their passes and obtain the offer that best suits them.
