Downhill skiing

Downhill skiing is the most popular winter sport in the world. You can do it as a family, alone or with friends, and goals can be as diverse as having a good time or risking your life travelling at 90 miles per hour in a downhill competition. The sport has no age limit as it is suitable for small children, youngsters and adults alike and means you can enjoy sport in nature. In Catalonia there are 11 downhill ski resorts and they are packed with skiers throughout the winter.

It involves skiing down snowy slopes with a board on each foot, the skis. The boots fix to the skis with binders that adapt to skiers according to weight and level. Once equipped, you can start to ski downhill combining balance and practice and tailoring your speed to your level of skill, the slope and snow conditions.

There are different types of competition skiing: downhill, super-G, slalom, giant slalom, combined and parallel. Catalan resorts organise international races in most of them.
